A formative usability test based on IEC 62366:2099 was carried out to evaluate safety and effectively of the Olympus ENDOALPA user interface. The results of this study are used for the interface' further development to create it as user friendly as possible for the use in a highly complex works space as an operating room is.

Olympus ENDOALPHA is an integrated solution for endoscopy that creates processes more efficient and offers gastroenterological and pneumological teams better ergonomics, communication and information processing. ENDOALPHA connects you and eases your workflow by a modular system. ENDOALPA offers one single user interface to operate project management, video management, documentation and a central control of al medical and peripheral devices in the operation room.
The goal of the study was to evaluate the combination of all these features in a single interface with respect to usability and to create suggestions for further improvement.
To achieve this goal, a User Feedback Day with five participants from the device' target group was carried out. A prototype of the new user interface was supposed to be used via a touch screen device. Users carried out typical tasks and were observed and interviewed by an usability expert. For parts of the user interface, different alternatives were evaluated.
The Olympus development team as well as the design agency observed the sessions live through monitors and one way mirrors. In between the session the results of the study were discussed between SirValUse and Olympus and change requests as well as mock ups were designed. The intensity of the testing day with an included workshop was able to directly deliver decisions on how to continue development without loosing time.
