Lufthansa

In the course of an international study for the Deutsche Lufthansa AG SirValUse tested prototypes of the “Inflight Entertainment” (IFE) system’s graphical user interface that is to be employed on-board Lufthansa’s long distance fleet, particularly on the Airbus A 380.

This user interface enables passengers to exert individual control over the entertainment on offer; according to their personal preference they may call up movies, music, or games. Our Tests aimed at investigating the Usability of the user interface with the specific input media (handsets) for each service class (First, Business and Economy Class). As a means to also optimise the user interface regarding the offer’s content, design/layout, and wording SirValUse conducted investigations in diverse cultural environments.

Apart from complying with general Usability criteria, the Graphical User Interface (GUI) of the “Inflight Entertainment” system must meet the requirements of the special ‘on-board’ environment as well. Thus, aircraft seats were employed in the User Experience Tests to re-create a most realistic test situation. In reproducing the particular ’on-board’ environment we observed the actual seat distance as well as screen sizes and used the prototypes of the entry media.

User Tests were conducted in Germany, Beijing, and Cairo to also consider the diverse cultural aspects of the heterogeneous passenger structure.

The international study provided illuminating clues as to the further optimisation of the user interface prototypes.
